drive-thru WiFi

Rutland Free Library — 10 Court St. in Rutland City — has free WiFi that is generally available from the street. If you can see in one of the windows into the middle of the building (on any side) the chances are that you can get a signal.

Look for Rutland Public, connect, then open a web browser to log in. There is one login screen, but no passwords! Reminder that it’s a wide-open signal so not as secure as a wired connection to the internet.

public computers

We have seven computers hardwired to the internet for secure, free public computing, available from opening to 10 minutes before close each day. They are available on a drop-in basis, and include one fully ADA-accessible machine with high-vis keyboard, trackball, large touch-screen display and adjustable-height desk. You do not have to be a library card holder to use the computers. We do offer computer user cards to save time for repeat visitors.

We have a PC in the Vermont room loaded with popular genealogy links, including Ancestry. Use is restricted to patrons doing genealogy research. We also have a microfilm reader, although Vermont residents will generally get better results from the Vermont Department of Libraries free subscription to Newspapers.com.

We can loan computers for in-building use for people using one of our meeting rooms. There are large screens, microphones, web cams and connection points in both rooms for videoconferencing / presentations / meetings. Staff can help with setup.

printing

We offer printing from our public computers or via USB stick for 25 cents / page black-and-white or 50 cents /page for color. Sorry, we do not have wireless printing (yet). Help desk staff can print from the rutlandfree@rutlandfree.org email for patrons in the building.

computer help

We have limited ability to provide computer assistance, including a volunteer tech tutor (call for hours / availability). Staff can help computer with basic access, search, and internet access, get you logged into Office software, and help with printing. We can troubleshoot issues with our own download services. We cannot fill out forms, make purchases, or write that letter for you.

We also have trained librarians on duty every hour we are open who can help you navigate our large selection of databases, including Consumer Reports, Chilton Auto Repair, Mango Languages, and more.
