ebooks and audiobooks
Downloadable ebooks / audiobooks
eBooks and audiobook downloads are available to read on a phone or tablet by downloading a free app, from either the App Store (Apple) or Google Play Store (Android).
Apple users, that's either Libby or The Palace Project,
For Android users, Libby is here & Palace is here.
Desktop / laptop users can also use Libby in a browser window at libbyapp.com.
Libby has the easiest interface and the most titles. It also now includes movies and magazines, so it's your quickest, easiest way to access most of our online content. And it includes listings for our Kanopy video streaming service, so you can search ebook, audiobook, and video from one app.
What about wait lists?
* Libby is a statewide system, and tends to have wait lists in the hundreds for popular new titles.
* We do subscribe to the "Advantage" program, which lets us order books when the wait list from Rutland cardholders starts to grow. Those additional copies are only for RFL subscribers, but they don't show up in the Libby wait list. SO you might be #165 statewide but third or fifth in line for an RFL Advantage copy. Courage!
And you have options:
1) Use the "Available Now" option in Libby to show you books you can download immediately while you're waiting for the one(s) you have on hold.
2) Try The Palace Project! Instead of leasing us individual copies of titles, Palace in many cases lets users borrow concurretly, so if your book club wants to read a Palace title, you can all borrow it at once.
Not only is Palace wait list-free, it offers a different selection, including books in a variety of languages, and includes thousands of classic titles from Project Gutenberg. Palace also helps libraries by letting us buy books instead of leasing them. Most Libby titles are returned after 16 or so uses and we have to pay for them again. The user interface on Palace isn't quite as slick (Libby is powered by OverDrive via Amazon; Palace is open source), but if you're comfortable with online searches, by all means give Palace a try!
Finally, if you're looking for printed books or periodicals, books on CD, WonderBooks, Playaways or other physical formats, please see our print materials page.
