Norman Sears, Cong Church\n\n411 Center Rutland { We have reason to suppose that in yonder burial place is the dust of the first person who died within this town, a youth 18 years of age by the name of Wendell son of one of the large original proprietors of this territory. The date of his burial is not far from 1776.\n\nHere I think was also buried Judge Bowdoin, a man of mark who presided as a chairman of the Convention declaring Vermont a free and sovereign State. Here also is buried an ancestor of Ralph Waldo Emerson. The date of these last two burials would be, I suppose not far from 1784.\n\nNo Main { Of the original fourteen members of the Congregational Church of Rutland, some lived in what is now the Main Street in the eastern part of the town, and these, about the year 1784 erected a building for religious worship on the west side of Main Street, not far from the farm of Moses Perkins. The ground immediately in the rear and at the side of this building was used as a place of burying from 1784 to 1817 and was therefore the second burying ground in Rutland\n\nWest Street { At this time 1817 during a very wet spring, this burying ground on Main Street was so evidently unfit for the deposit for which it was set aside that Judge Shroy obtained from the proprietors that portion of land lying on West Street near the Methodist Church which from that time to this has been used for burial purposes and his own daughter was the first person interred therein in March of that year.\n\nEvergreen { Deed to Evergreen Cemetery bears the date of June 2, 1850. and is made by William Loomis Esq of Center, Rutland, Vt. The original purchasers of this property as described in the deed were John Proctor, Adelina Chaffee, H. Henry Bapster and William Gilmore Esq. To them we are indebted for the efforts and means for the first purchase. "}
