Kilburn, Captain\nCo., D., 7th Volunteer\nVermont Regiment, dated December 14, 1862, and written from Pensacola,\nFlorida, as follows:\n\"It becomes my duty to inform you of the death of your hus-band.\nHe died at the Marine Hospital, New Orleans, Dec.\n3,\n1862, of Dysentery.\nWhen we left New Orleans on the 15th of\nNovember he was unable to come with us and was sent to the Hospital.\nEbben has been quito siok but is now getting to\nbe quite hardy\".\nThere are four \"Certificate jackets\" in the file showing award of the follow ing pensions, all under the Act of Congress passed July 14, 18626\n(1)\nSarah Ann Bishop, widow of Smith B. Bateman.\nReuben R. Thrall was\nher attorney•\nPapers\nshow that Smith B. Bishop\nenrolled Dec. 2, 1861 at Rutland in Company\nD,\n7th Regiment of Vermont Volunteers,\nserve\n3 years or\nduring the war.\nMustered in as private February 12, 1862 at Rutlend,\nVt. On Muster Roll of\nthat company through November and December 1862. Died Dec. 3, 18620\nPrior to\nabove, on January 7, 1863, Forace Batenan and Lucinda Gary (?) signed\naffidavits as to their long acquaintance with both Smith B. Bishop and Sarah Bishop his wife.\nResided near\nthem for many years and that the children of\nthe widow on\nabove date, under the age of 16 years, were Orlando Bishop and\nBetsey Bishop, both of Butlend.\nNewton Squires, Town Clerk of Mendon makes deposition that he has maden thorough examination of the records of Town of Mendon and there is no record of the man\nriage of Smith B. Bishop and Sarah Ann Batemen.\nThe reupon\nHorace Bateman of Rutland, aged 34 years on April 6, 1863, before a\nNotary Public, under oath mede affidavit that Sareh Ann Bishop is his sister and that he was present at her wedding to Smith B.
