When Joseph was fifteen years old in 1784 he loes Witchester, alone, bashout a to mates shone for\nhimself. He arrived in Rutland and began work at whatever he could find to do, making his home with and worl ing for Isaac Chatterton. SHe also worked a year for a man who had contract for building the old stone jail on Main street in Rutland village.\nHe worked also for John:\nsutherland and about the year 1790 purchased land from him for which he paid \"L\n60 lawful money\".\nembraced the territory where R. S. Humphrey lived and extended south to the Mead farm and easterly to Otter Creek.\nIn 1793 when this purchase was made\nthere was\na log house on the place which had been abandoned: long enought for. a sumach tree to grow in the fireplace.
