Mr. Larkin had for about five months before his demise been in very poor health, requiring daily the\nattendance of a physician,\nalthough at no time unconscious or entirely helpless.\nFor the last month, however, he has been confined to his room, and constantly growing weaker and weaker,\nand his death was expected at any moment as it was\nknown he\ncould never recover,\nand Tuesday morning the spirit of Abel Larkin quietly\ntook its\nflight to the Cod\nthat gave it.\n\"Mr. Larkin was born in Rutland, Vermont,\nin the year 1801.\nWhen he was but\nthree years old, his parents moved to Chio, where he lived until he became a young\nHis aspirations induced him to come westward, and in 1829, he reached the\nState of Illinois, where he spent nearly a year looking over the country.\nIn the\nspring of 1829, he came to this county and made an informal claim in Sec. 21, now in Mt. Sterling township.\nThis he could not enter until 1830, as it did not come\ninto market until that date.\nIn order to hold the claim he commenced a small\nimppovement upon the same a year prior,\n1829. He erected a cabin,\nsplit rails, and\nbroke a\nsmall patch of ground.\nWhen the time came for sale, he went to Edwardsville\nand purchased his land, paying $1.25 an acre. In 1832 he erected a hewed log house, working his land and'batching' it during most of the time until 1835 when he married Adaline Hadley of Hancock County• From this marriage,\nEleven children were\nZimrhode L.,\nfour of the children are\nnow living.\nMrs. Zimrhode Ward,\nof this township, Mrs. Isabelle Rouse, of Lee\ntownship,\nthis\ncounty, Mrs. Mary Kerr of Columbia, Mo.,\nand Mrs. Sarah Mitchell,\nof Auburn, Placer Co., California.\nThe funeral took place Wednesday at 3 o'clock,\nP.M•,\nfrom\nthe residence of\nMrs. Larkin,\nthe Rev. R. Chapman conducting the services,\nand was attended by a\nlarge\nnumber of our citizens.\nTo all who knew Mr. Larkin,\neulogy is unnecessary.\nHis long life among us had\ntaught us to love and respect his noble character; always upright and honorable in his dealings with his fellow man, he gained a reputation for honesty and integrity\ntruly enviable.\nHis kind and courteous manner at all times endeared him to the\nhearts of our citizens, and his pleasant face will be sadly missed, aad his memory outlive the numerous friends he leaves behind.
