Thomas,\nMiddlebury College president, in his principal address spoke\nof the sterling\ncharacter of\nVermont men,\n\"their worthy\nancestors and their passion for\nthe mastery of their own land\nand the future freedom of their children.\nMrs. Connie Glynn Cocklin\nunfurled the U.S. flag, lettingit drape over her shoulder as the\n*Star Spangled Banner,\nThe statue was proposed at the time by DAR regent Mrs.\nH.H.
