Congdon, Danby, Vt.\nMy dear Mr. Congdon:\nThank you very much for your very kind letter, and I\nappreciate very\nI\nmuch\nYour reaction to the little talk which agree with you on practically every-\nthing you say•\ngave in Whiting don't think there is any question but what\nmore\nthan one\nside to\nmessenger was sent out throughout the country-\nget the Green Mountain Boys ready for Ethan Allen,\nand it is a known fact that among\nthe first of these Green\nMountain Boys or Minutemen to arrive at Castleton were\nGershom\nand Samuel, father and son,\nand the chances are they both did\nstart out.\nHowever, I think you will have to agree with me\nthat\na father of 47 would not take on the run which Samuel,\nat 23, took on.\nI once again suggest to you, if you have not already\nread it,\nthat you read the article by\nKarl S. Brong, a descend-\nant of Samuel,\nwhich appeared in the Vermont Quarterly of the\nVermont Historical Society of July, 1951.\nThis article, I\nbelieve,\nexplains better than any. I have ever read about Samuel,\nand I do know that Mr.\nBrong spent much of his lifetime in\ntrying to determine which one should be considered.\nYou are also right as to the military title of Samuel, in that I have a photostatic copy of the commission which was granted to Samuel by Thomas Chittenden, the rank of his father\nso his rank comes from\nthe State Militia, and I believe, al so of Sergeant.\nIt is always interesting trying to determine these histor-\nical facts,\nactually,\nit is almost impossible,\nbecause the\nvarious statements of later historians are merely heresay, and therefore,\nunreliable,\nand any statement becomes a legend\nas it\nis repeated.\nAs I said in my letter to you, it is incredible\nwould\nto us' tell untruths to\nthe descendants,\nher nieces\nthat Samuel's own daughter' I an sure\nDelia Beach,\nshe wouldn't.\nI am also gure that Samuel was\nthat he went through\nthose communities, and I am not doubting\nfor one moment but what Gershom had a lot to do about it too, because he was as vitally interested in it as Samuel.\nAs I\nor Samuel, but again, we will go with Samel.\nSincerely yours,\nCH B/s.\nBrown, "}
