ebook and audiobook downloads — Libby & Palace
Now with two services to choose from:
NEW!!
Find a huge collection of magazines on the Libby app! Simply log in, select “Magazine” as your subject, and browse to your heart’s content.
ListenUp Vermont (Libby) has the most search functions and is the place most of us start new users with downloads. It has added a new collection of classic titles for students. Look for the Duke Classic series once you are logged in. There are no limits on the number of copies available, so they’re perfect for group reads.
Libby also uses Amazon technology to deliver your choices, so is fully Kindle-friendly.
The Palace Project — a relatively new app, it has fewer bells and whistles. Unlike Libby, we get to keep books we purchase on Palace, so it’s a better deal for libraries. It has a couple of distinctive features going for it, like multilingual support. That means titles, and browsing for titles, in many of the languages native to new Vermonters, including a lot of kids’ books in world languages. And Palace has a huge collection of classic (out of copyright) titles, in English and other languages. Because its buy-it-once-and-keep-it philosophy is completely at odds with that of Amazon (and many of the major publishers), it does not support Kindle, which is an Amazon product.
Both download services are provided by the Vermont Department of Libraries. Both let you download eBooks and audiobooks to your phone, computer, reader, tablet, iPod/MP3 player or other mobile device.
Both apps draw from Project Gutenberg. That’s a collection of 60,000+ (and growing) copyright-free titles available for free download at any time. The apps help organize them for easier browsing but the titles are the same.
